Where your fingers go

Left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;, thumbs on the space bar. Each finger owns the keys directly above and below its home key; the index fingers also cover the middle columns (G, H, T, Y, B, N and so on).

How to practise

Go slowly enough that you never look down. Short tests repeated often work best. When a letter keeps catching you out, drill it on its own in practice mode, then come back to a normal test.

How is WPM worked out?

Words per minute counts every five correctly typed characters (spaces included) as one word, then scales that to a minute. It's the same convention most typing tests use, so your score compares fairly with them.

Accuracy is the share of words you typed exactly right. Mistyped words don't count toward your WPM, so slowing down slightly to stay accurate usually raises your score.

Questions

Is touch typing faster?

Almost always, once it's learned. Your eyes stay on the text and every finger has less distance to travel.

Is this typing test free?

Yes. You can take as many tests as you like without signing up. A free account saves your results, tracks your progress and lets you race friends.

Do I need to install anything?

No — it runs in your browser on any computer with a keyboard.
